4 Conditions

Julian Ageyman from Tufts University published a reading that introduces the topic of just sustainabilities. Introducing Just Sustainabilities Policy, Planing, and Practice, discusses the  role of social justice, equity, and inclusivity that plays a part in urban sustainable policy planning. The reading highlights four key conditions that are essential in order for a community to be both just and sustainable.

“From global to local, human inequality is as detrimental to our future as the loss of environment potential, and only a just sustainabilites approach to policy, planning, and practice has an analysis and theory of change with strategies to transform the way in which we treat each other and our planet (Ageyman 7).

4 Conditions

1. Improving quality of life and well-being

Building safe shelters and offering walking distance resources to those in need of substance abuse help is key in improving the lives of people. Too many people are suffering from homelessness and substance abuse. Living with either of these issues does not allow for someone to have a sustainable quality of life and healthy well-being. By having resources for people in need it can help people get better.

2. Meeting the needs of present and future generations

By meeting the demand for the need of resources ensures that people present and in the future can be taken care of. Providing homelessness and substance abuse resources people are able to get the help they need.  They are able to take care of the problems they are currently facing. While also preparing for what their future might hold as well. People are not able to succeed without the necessary resources.

3.  Equity and justice

Everyone should be welcomed to get the help they deserve! There should be no limitations to who gets help and who does not. Everyone should be able to ask and receive the help they need regardless of gender, race, financial status ECT.

4. Living within an ecosystems limits

Sustainable efforts to combat homelessness and substance abuse should not limit economic growth. The constraints of natural resources is something that must be taken into account as well.
